Content Creator Held in Fraud Case

A Dhaka court has formally shown the arrest of content creator Touhid Afridi in connection with a case involving allegations of fraud and breach of trust.

On Monday, 15 June, police produced Afridi before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in Dhaka from prison custody. Following the hearing, the investigating officer of a case filed with Wari Police Station submitted a petition seeking to formally record his arrest in the matter. After reviewing the submission and hearing arguments, Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Hasan Shahadat approved the application. The court subsequently ordered that Afridi be returned to custody in connection with the case.

According to details contained in the case dossier, the complaint originates from an alleged online fraud operation dating back to 13 January 2025. The complainant was reportedly approached by members of a coordinated cyber-enabled scam network through messaging platforms including WhatsApp and Telegram. The group allegedly lured the victim with promises of employment opportunities and investment-based earnings.

Initially, small financial returns were provided to build trust and credibility. However, once confidence was established, the victim was persuaded to transfer increasingly larger sums of money in multiple instalments. Despite repeated assurances that the invested funds would be returned along with profits, a total of approximately 235,000 Bangladeshi taka was ultimately misappropriated, according to the allegation.

The case was later filed at Wari Police Station by Syeda Ashfaha Toaha Dyuti, naming an unidentified group of accused individuals alongside the ongoing investigation into their identities and roles within the alleged scheme.

Afridi was earlier arrested on 24 August last year in a separate operation conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). He was detained from Barishal and has remained in custody since that time. The latest court order formally connects him to the ongoing fraud investigation, ensuring his detention continues under judicial supervision in relation to this specific case.
