CUMILLA STUDENT DEATH UNDER INVESTIGATION

The death of a 23-year-old university student in Cumilla is under investigation after her body was recovered from a residential flat in the city’s Monohorpur Munsifbari area. The deceased, Jannatun Naim Fariha, was a 12th batch student of the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department at CCN Science and Technology University.

Police recovered her body from flat 2/A of a building named ‘Kashem Garden’ on Tuesday night (5 May). The incident was later confirmed on Wednesday evening (6 May) by the officer-in-charge of Cumilla Kotwali Model Police Station, Touhidul Anwar.

Case details

Authorities stated that the body was retrieved after police forced entry into the flat at around 10:00 pm. The remains were subsequently sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. Police have noted that the cause of death will be confirmed following the autopsy report.

While the initial assessment suggests possible suicide, investigators have not ruled out other possibilities and are awaiting forensic findings.

Family and marital background

According to family accounts, Fariha was married approximately eight months ago to Mehedi Hasan Hridoy, son of Abdur Rahim from Meghna upazila in Cumilla. The marriage was arranged through family agreement. After the marriage, Hridoy reportedly travelled to China on a scholarship but later returned to Bangladesh after unsuccessful attempts to complete his studies.

Following his return, he remained unemployed for a period, which reportedly led to financial strain and marital discord between the couple.

On Monday, Fariha returned to her husband’s residence in Cumilla from her parental home. Her death was reported the following day.

Allegations from family

The victim’s father, Md. Hanif Mia, alleged that his daughter had been subjected to repeated physical and mental abuse. He further stated that she had previously been threatened with being implicated in legal cases. According to him, there is suspicion that the death may not have been a suicide, and that it could have been staged.

He has called for a full and impartial investigation into the incident and demanded justice.

University statement

The registrar of CCN Science and Technology University, Professor Md. Jamal Nasher, expressed condolences and described Fariha as one of the institution’s more promising students. He stated that her death is deeply unfortunate and urged authorities to ensure a proper investigation and legal process.
