DB police arrest fraudulent ‘Jinn King’ in Bogura

Mahidul Islam (35), accused of deceiving people and extorting large sums of money by posing as a ‘Jinn King’ with alleged mystical abilities, has been arrested by DB police. The arrest took place on Thursday (4 December) night from his residence in Ranirpara village under Sonatala upazila of Bogura.

According to the FIR filed by complainant Mominur Rahman, Mahidul, son of Tojam Akand of Ranirpara, and his associates had been trapping people for a long time by pretending to be spiritual healers. Mominur first met Mahidul at an Islamic event in Mahasthan, Shibganj, Bogura, after which communication between them continued.

On 7 September, after offering Asr prayers, Mominur left home. Around 10pm, his daughter Fatema told him that an Islamic event was being held at Mahidul’s home. Mominur and five others reached there around 11:15pm. As per the complaint, the next day the accused allegedly administered medicine, chemicals or spiritual substances through food, leaving him disoriented and unable to make decisions. Despite telling relatives he would return home, he remained missing for seven days.

During this period, the accused allegedly extorted Tk 12 lakh from him via cash and bKash. On 4 December, retired Army warrant officer Mominur Rahman of Phultala, Shahjahanpur, lodged a case with Sonatala Police Station.

After the case was filed, DB police increased intelligence activity and arrested Mahidul on Thursday night. Police recovered from him two human bones, two kohl holders, three red cloths, one attar bottle, two amulets, three white cloth pieces, three large rosaries, five incense sticks and black thread.

In primary interrogation, Mahidul admitted that he deceived people through claims of spiritual healing and supernatural abilities. He was handed over to Shahjahanpur Police Station.

OC Shafiqul Islam confirmed that he has been sent to Bogura jail following a court order.
