A man has been detained by local residents and later handed over to police after he allegedly attempted to abandon a critically injured elderly man beside a secluded road in Palash upazila of Narsingdi, Bangladesh. The incident occurred around 8am on Wednesday along the Pachdona–Ghorashal road near the Bagdi area, sparking immediate alarm and public outrage.
According to eyewitness accounts, a microbus stopped briefly by the roadside in a relatively quiet stretch of the area. Locals reported seeing a severely injured elderly man, covered in blood, being brought out of the vehicle. As the situation unfolded, bystanders quickly intervened when they realised the man was being left unattended by the roadside. The driver of the vehicle, identified as Monir Hossain, was restrained by members of the public at the scene before being handed over to police. The confrontation briefly escalated, with reports that the driver was assaulted before authorities arrived.
The elderly man, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, was rushed to Palash Upazila Health Complex in critical condition. Medical staff there declared him dead on arrival, deepening the shock among those present and intensifying concerns within the local community.
Monir Hossain, who hails from Chirapara village in Banaripara upazila of Barishal district, later told police during preliminary questioning that the injured man had been placed in his vehicle by unidentified individuals near a filling station in the Gabtali area. He claimed he had been instructed to take the man to hospital. However, he alleged that, fearing legal complications and panic during transit, he decided to abandon the patient at a deserted location instead.
Police from Palash Police Station arrived at the scene shortly after being informed and brought the situation under control. Shahidul Alam, the Officer-in-Charge of the station, confirmed that the injured man was pronounced dead at hospital and that the driver had been taken into custody for questioning. He added that investigators are working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the elderly man sustained such severe injuries and who else may have been involved.
The incident has triggered widespread concern among residents, with many questioning how a critically injured person could be transported in such a manner and then abandoned without urgent medical attention. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as they attempt to uncover the sequence of events and identify any additional individuals connected to the case.
