A deeply distressing incident in Keraniganj Model Police Station area has left the local community in shock after a 70-year-old man was allegedly stabbed to death by his stepson over a long-standing property dispute.
The deceased, Mohammad Shahi Islam, son of the late Nurul Islam, lived in Goalkhali village under Shakta Union in Dhaka’s Keraniganj upazila. According to local sources, Shahi Islam had been married multiple times, and his current wife, Nazma Begum, had a son, Alamin (26), from her previous marriage. Alamin had been residing in the same household for an extended period.
Family members and neighbours reported that tensions had been simmering for months over the division and ownership of family land. What began as disagreements over inheritance gradually escalated into frequent verbal altercations, creating a strained domestic environment.
Police and eyewitness accounts suggest that the tragedy unfolded around 5:00 a.m. on Friday, when Shahi Islam and Alamin were inside the same room. An argument reportedly broke out, allegedly triggered by the ongoing land dispute. The confrontation quickly intensified into a physical struggle.
During the altercation, Alamin is accused of using a sharp weapon to stab his stepfather in the abdomen. Shahi Islam sustained critical injuries and reportedly died on the spot before any medical assistance could be provided.
Hearing his cries, Nazma Begum and her two daughters rushed to the scene from an adjacent room. They discovered him lying in a pool of blood and immediately raised an alarm. Their screams drew nearby residents, who rushed to the house and were left stunned by the horrific scene.
A local Union Parishad member, Rahim Khan, promptly informed emergency services. Acting swiftly, police from Keraniganj Model Police Station arrived at the scene, recovered the body, and conducted an initial inquest. The accused, Alamin, was detained on-site by locals and later taken into police custody.
The body was subsequently sent to Sir Salimullah Medical College (Mitford Hospital) for post-mortem examination. Authorities have confirmed that preliminary findings point to a domestic and land-related dispute as the primary motive behind the killing.
