A rapid response team has arrested five individuals in connection with a violent armed robbery and attempted murder of a Chinese national in South Keraniganj, on the outskirts of Dhaka. Law enforcement officials have also recovered a portion of the stolen goods, while several other suspects remain at large.
According to a press briefing issued by the commanding officer of Rapid Action Battalion-10, Additional Deputy Inspector General Mohammad Kamruzzaman, the incident took place during the late hours of 14 April. A gang of approximately 15 to 16 armed assailants entered the Yang Zhi Jiang project area in a coordinated operation. The group allegedly targeted foreign nationals residing in the site, launching a sudden and aggressive attack.
During the raid, the attackers looted cash, mobile phones, wristwatches and other valuables from the victims. In one particularly violent episode, a 55-year-old Chinese national, identified as Wen Jinhua, was severely injured after being struck with sharp weapons. He was swiftly rescued by local residents and transported to a nearby hospital, where he remains under medical care. His condition has been described as serious but stable.
The attack caused widespread alarm in the locality, with residents reporting panic following the intrusion of the armed group into the project site. Authorities believe the incident was premeditated, with the gang specifically targeting the accommodation area of foreign workers.
Following the incident, Rapid Action Battalion-10 launched an intensive intelligence-led operation. Through a series of coordinated raids in different locations, five active members of the gang were apprehended. Officials stated that preliminary interrogation revealed the suspects’ direct involvement in planning and executing the robbery.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Masud Rana (43), Nasir Piada (40), Hridoy Mir (22), Roman Sheikh (34), and Mohammad Mamun (32). Law enforcement sources indicated that several of them have prior criminal records involving similar offences.
During the arrests, authorities recovered stolen property including three foreign-brand wristwatches, two mobile phones, and cash amounting to BDT 15,700. Efforts are underway to return the recovered items to their rightful owners.
A case has been filed at South Keraniganj Police Station naming the arrested suspects, along with 15 to 16 unidentified accomplices. Investigators are continuing efforts to identify and apprehend the remaining members of the group.
Officials have stated that the crackdown on organised criminal networks in the area will be intensified to prevent similar incidents in the future. Enhanced surveillance and intelligence monitoring have already been introduced in sensitive industrial and residential project zones.
