In Mirpur upazila of Kushtia, police have taken five individuals, identifying themselves as local leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami, into custody after they allegedly attempted to secure the release of a detained drug suspect. The incident took place on Saturday night (9 May) at Mirpur Police Station.
According to police sources, the detained individual, identified as Robiul Islam (33), is the son of Ramzan Ali of Noda Azampur village in Mirpur upazila. He has been described by law enforcement as a known drug trader in the area. Robiul Islam was arrested earlier the same night during a police operation conducted in connection with anti-narcotics activities in the locality.
Following his detention, a group of five individuals arrived at the police station and sought his release, introducing themselves as political representatives. Police stated that the group attempted to exert influence on behalf of the detainee. After initial verification, all five were placed under police custody at the station for further questioning.
The individuals taken into custody include Enamul Haque (45), a member of the Sadarpur Union Parishad and a BNP leader, son of Nur Mohammad Mollah of Noda Azampur; Alauddin (43), son of Meher Ali Malitha, identified as a Jamaat-e-Islami-affiliated figure and a nominated member candidate for Sadarpur Union; Sujan Ali (33), son of Ali Akbar; Shafiqur Islam (25), son of Ramzan Mondol; and Saidul Islam (39), son of the late Ishaq Malitha.
Police confirmed that Robiul Islam is a long-identified drug trader in the area and that he was apprehended as part of ongoing efforts to curb narcotics-related activities in Mirpur. Officers also stated that the group’s intervention at the police station occurred shortly after his arrest.
