Police in Nalchhiti, under the Jhalakathi district, have arrested four local leaders of the ruling Awami League and its affiliate organisations, including a headmaster of a prominent secondary school. The coordinated drive was launched following intelligence reports suggesting potential sabotage and public disorder surrounding National Mourning Day on 15 August.
The law enforcement operation commenced on Friday afternoon when multiple teams from Nalchhiti Police Station executed sudden raids across several strategic areas, including Subidpur, Kulkathi, Dapdapia, and the local municipality area. The arrests came after Police Headquarters issued a nationwide security alert to prevent any untoward incidents, violence, or political disruption ahead of the high-profile national observance.
The detained individuals have been identified as Md Jolilur Rahman Akon, Headmaster of Nalchhiti Merchant Secondary Girls’ School and Secretary of Publicity for the Nalchhiti Upazila Awami League; Md Shamsul Alam Mollick, General Secretary of the Kulkathi Union Awami League; Nazrul Islam Molla, General Secretary of the Subidpur Union Krishak League; and Abdul Malek Molla, General Secretary of Ward No. 2 Awami League in Dapdapia Union.
According to police authorities, actionable intelligence indicated that groups were planning covert political gatherings and flash processions intended to destabilise public peace. Acting swiftly on these reports, law enforcement officers rounded up the suspects, who were immediately taken into police custody for thorough interrogation.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nalchhiti Police Station, Touhiduzzaman Sohag, confirmed the arrests to the press. He emphasised that maintaining law and order remains the security forces’ top priority, reassuring the public that any attempt to breach the peace would be met with firm police action. The preemptive raids were conducted to neutralize potential threats before any unlawful activities could materialise.
Following standard legal procedure, formal charges are being processed, and the suspects will be presented before the court. In response to the heightened tension, security measures have been intensified across Nalchhiti. Additional police checkpoints and patrols have been deployed at major intersections and entry points since Friday evening to restore public confidence and guarantee safety across the upazila.
