Students, parents, and local residents in Ramganj Upazila of Lakshmipur District have staged demonstrations, human chains, and road blockades for the sixth consecutive day, demanding justice for the murder of student Mehedi Hasan. On Sunday, 21 June 2026, at approximately 11:00 am, over a thousand people from various educational institutions in the upazila gathered at the Chowrasta area of Ramganj municipal town to participate in the protest. The demonstrators demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those involved in the killing.
The victim, Mehedi Hasan, was a Year 9 (eighth-grade) student at the Farid Ahmed Bhuiyan Academy. On 16 June 2026, his body was recovered from the residential hall of the academy. Allegations have been made that senior students hanged his body after murdering him. Following the incident, a formal murder case was filed, naming 18 individuals as accused.
The protestors expressed growing resentment, pointing out that six days have elapsed since the recovery of the body, yet not a single suspect has been apprehended by law enforcement agencies. This lack of progress has intensified the anger among the student body and the local community.
During the protest, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ramganj Police Station, Firoz Uddin Chowdhury, arrived at the scene to brief the demonstrators. He stated that the accused individuals named in the case are currently absconding, and multiple police teams are actively conducting operations to arrest them. Following his briefing, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Kazi Atikur Rahman, engaged in discussions with the leaders of the demonstration to pacify the crowd.
Dissatisfied with these verbal assurances, the protestors officially issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the local administration to apprehend the perpetrators. They subsequently suspended their road blockades and protest programmes temporarily, warning that a failure to meet the deadline would result in a resumption of stricter agitations.
A factual summary of the murder case, timelines, and current administrative responses is structured in the table below:
