Four Killed in Sarail Bus Plunge

A tragic road accident on the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway in Sarail Upazila of Brahmanbaria claimed the lives of four people and left at least 30 others injured when a passenger bus lost control and overturned into a roadside ditch on Monday afternoon.

The accident occurred at approximately 12:30 pm in the Baishamura area of Shahbazpur Union. The incident prompted an immediate rescue response involving local residents, police officers and emergency service personnel, who worked together to free trapped passengers and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.

According to police, eyewitness accounts and local sources, the bus belonged to Diganta Paribahan and was travelling towards Brahmanbaria from the Madhabpur area. As the vehicle reached Baishamura, the driver reportedly lost control, causing the bus to veer off the highway, overturn and plunge into a deep roadside ditch.

The force of the crash severely damaged the front section of the vehicle. Several passengers became trapped inside the wreckage, requiring rescuers to carry out a coordinated extraction operation. Residents living near the accident site were among the first to respond, helping to remove victims before emergency services arrived.

The injured passengers were taken to various healthcare facilities in the region. Hospital sources indicated that several victims sustained serious injuries and were transferred to specialised medical centres for advanced treatment. Medical teams have continued to monitor the condition of those requiring intensive care.

Police later confirmed the identities of the four deceased victims. They were Munshi Arsh Ali of Shahbazpur village in Sarail Upazila, a child named Alif, Mousumi Das of Paikpara in Brahmanbaria Sadar Upazila, and Tanoy Kumar Majumdar of Ibrahimpur village in Nabinagar Upazila. The incident once again highlights ongoing concerns regarding road safety on Bangladesh’s major highways. Transport experts frequently point to factors such as excessive speed, driver error, vehicle maintenance deficiencies and challenging road conditions as common contributors to serious traffic accidents. While preliminary reports suggest that the driver lost control of the bus, officials have emphasised that a full investigation will be required before determining the precise cause of the crash.

Abu Taher Dewan, Officer-in-Charge of Khatihata Highway Police Station, confirmed the fatalities and stated that the four victims died at the scene after the vehicle fell into the ditch. He added that authorities moved swiftly to ensure medical treatment for the injured and have already begun investigative procedures to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Local administration officials and law-enforcement agencies reported that immediate measures were taken after the crash to maintain the normal flow of traffic on the busy highway. Recovery teams subsequently removed the damaged bus from the roadside. Authorities have also pledged continued support for the injured victims and assistance to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragedy.

The accident has cast a shadow of grief over the affected communities and serves as another reminder of the importance of strengthening road-safety measures on one of the country’s busiest transport corridors.
