A severe heatwave in southern Bangladesh has claimed the life of a 55-year-old woman in Narail district, highlighting the growing risks posed by extreme temperatures during the peak agricultural season.
The incident occurred on Monday morning (20 April) at approximately 10:30 am in the Machimdia area of Narail town. The deceased, identified as Lovely Begum (55), was a resident of Auria village in Narail Sadar Upazila and the wife of Daud Molla.
According to family members and local sources, the tragedy unfolded amid the ongoing Boro paddy cultivation season, when demand for irrigation fuel had increased significantly. As her husband has been suffering from long-term illness, Lovely Begum had taken full responsibility for managing both household affairs and agricultural activities on their leased farmland.
On the morning of the incident, she travelled from her village to a local filling station in Machimdia to collect diesel required for irrigation pumps. Upon arrival, she was reportedly forced to stand in a lengthy queue under intense sunlight and high humidity. After waiting for an extended period, she collected approximately three litres of diesel and began her return journey home.
However, shortly after leaving the station, she suddenly collapsed near the Machimdia mosque. Witnesses said she appeared visibly weak before losing consciousness.
Local residents quickly rushed to her aid and transported her to Narail District Hospital. Unfortunately, doctors on duty confirmed that she had died before arrival. Preliminary medical assessments suggest that the cause of death was likely heat-related illness, compounded by dehydration, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and physical exhaustion.
Her brother, Nazmul, stated that the family had been under financial strain, and due to her husband’s illness, Lovely Begum had been personally handling all farming responsibilities. He added that she had left home that morning for routine agricultural work and never returned alive.
Officials at the filling station said they were unaware of any incident occurring within their premises, noting that operations were continuing as usual at the time.
