Mexican authorities have discovered a decomposing male corpse inside the boot of an abandoned sport utility vehicle parked near the Iran national football team’s hotel in Tijuana. The Iranian squad is currently operating under stringent security measures in the border city as they finalise their preparations for the FIFA World Cup.
The national team is staying at the local Marriott Hotel, which sits adjacent to the Caliente Stadium where their daily training sessions take place. According to local reports, a grey Toyota SUV had remained stationary in a supermarket parking lot directly opposite the sporting venue since Wednesday. On Friday, 12 June, emergency services were contacted by members of the public after a pungent odour began emitting from the stationary vehicle.
Upon opening the vehicle, municipal police officers found the remains concealed within a black plastic bag in the luggage compartment. Representatives from the Tijuana prosecutor’s office informed the news agency AFP that the body bore definitive indicators of physical trauma and violence.
A specialised forensic unit, wearing protective hazardous material suits, subsequently arrived at the supermarket parking lot to conduct a detailed sweep of the vehicle. After compiling the initial post-mortem data, the forensic team transferred the body to local facilities for a formal autopsy.
The presence of the Iranian national team in Mexico is the direct result of geopolitical tensions. The federation had originally intended to host its pre-tournament training camp inside the United States. However, recent military and political conflict between Washington and Tehran forced a last-minute cancellation of those plans, leading the delegation to establish their alternative base camp across the border in Tijuana.
