DHAKA — The Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, has formally convened a four-member investigation committee to probe an incident in which several members of the Dhaka University Journalists’ Association (DUJA) sustained injuries. The physical altercations occurred during a period of heightened friction between JCD activists and leaders of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) at Shahbag Police Station.
The decision to initiate a formal inquiry was ratified during an emergency organisational meeting of the JCD, held at the DUCSU cafeteria on Friday, 24 April 2026. In conjunction with the investigative measures, the student organisation has issued an official apology to the journalists’ association for the violence encountered by its members.
Origin and Escalation of the Confrontation
The conflict originated on Thursday, 23 April 2026, purportedly triggered by an “indecent and distasteful” social media post on Facebook. The digital dispute rapidly escalated into a physical confrontation at the Shahbag Police Station, where JCD activists had assembled. Members of the DUJA arrived at the precinct to provide media coverage of the tensions between the JCD and DUCSU leadership.
During the execution of their professional duties, several journalists were reportedly targeted and injured as the situation at the police station deteriorated. In a statement released via the JCD’s official Facebook portal, the organisation admitted that “unintended incidents” had occurred involving its grassroots activists and media personnel.
Following the emergency session on Friday, JCD General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir formally expressed regret over the injuries sustained by the press corps.
“We have formed an inquiry committee to investigate the unfortunate incident at Shahbag, where several members of the Dhaka University Journalists’ Association were injured. We express our sincere apologies to the journalists’ association for this occurrence,” Nasir stated.
Panel Composition and Investigative Mandate
The JCD central command has appointed a high-level, four-member panel to oversee the disciplinary inquiry. The committee is comprised of the following senior figures:
Zahir Raihan Ahmed: Vice-President of the JCD Central Committee.
A.B.M. Ijazul Kabir Ruel: Vice-President of the JCD Central Committee.
Anisur Rahman Khandaker Anik: Vice-President of the JCD Dhaka University Unit.
Nasir Uddin Shaon: Senior Joint General Secretary of the JCD Dhaka University Unit.
The committee has been granted a strict mandate to conduct a “thorough and proper investigation” into the allegations of assault and harassment against the media workers. According to the official notification, the panel is required to submit a comprehensive written report detailing its findings to the JCD Central Parliament within a five-day window.
Institutional Implications and Press Security
The assault has generated significant apprehension within the media community at Dhaka University. The DUJA, which represents correspondents from numerous national print and electronic media outlets stationed at the campus, serves as a vital link between the student body and the public. The association typically maintains a level of coordination with student political wings to ensure the safety of reporters during demonstrations and political events.
The JCD leadership indicated that the emergency meeting was summoned specifically to address the breach of conduct and the resulting friction with the press. The organisation emphasised that the investigation is designed to identify specific individuals responsible for the violence and to implement measures to prevent a recurrence of such hostilities.
Shahbag, situated immediately adjacent to the university campus, is a perennial focal point for student activism and police intervention. The involvement of DUCSU leaders, who wield considerable influence over the campus political climate, contributed to the volatility of the Thursday evening encounter.
The JCD has signalled that disciplinary sanctions may follow the submission of the investigative report should members be found to have violated the organisation’s internal code of conduct. As of Friday afternoon, the injured journalists are reportedly under medical observation, whilst the DUJA continues to monitor the progress of the JCD’s internal proceedings. This incident marks a notable strain on the relationship between student political groups and the university’s accredited media representatives.
