Kalatali Gas Station Blast Injures Sixteen

Cox’s Bazar was shaken on Wednesday night by a devastating explosion at a liquefied petroleum gas station in the Kalatali area, leaving at least sixteen people with burn injuries, ten of them in critical condition.

The blast occurred at approximately 9:00 pm at a facility known as Cox’s Bazar Filling Station, situated near Chandrima Housing in the Adarsha village neighbourhood. According to eyewitnesses, a strong smell of gas spread through the vicinity shortly before the explosion. Moments later, a thunderous detonation was heard, followed by flames that rapidly engulfed the surrounding area. Residents, gripped by panic, fled their homes in search of safety.

Medical authorities confirmed that three of the critically injured victims were transferred to specialised treatment centres in the capital, while seven others were taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for advanced care. The remaining injured individuals are being treated at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.

Fire Service and Civil Defence officials reported that the gas station had been preparing to commence operations prior to its formal inauguration. Crucially, the installation had allegedly been established without obtaining the required fire safety clearance. Preliminary assessments suggest that a gas leak triggered the explosion, though a full technical investigation is under way.

A total of ten emergency response units, supported by members of the army, air force and navy, worked for nearly four hours to contain the blaze. The fire was finally brought under control around 1:00 am, after the approximately 14,000-litre storage tank had completely discharged its contents.

Beyond the human toll, the material damage is extensive. At least ten residential houses were partially or severely damaged, along with between twenty and twenty-five tourist transport jeeps parked nearby. Initial estimates indicate that financial losses may run into several crore in local currency, although a comprehensive assessment has yet to be completed.

The affected neighbourhood is home to roughly 20,000 residents, raising fears of a far higher casualty count. Officials acknowledged that swift evacuation and coordinated emergency efforts likely prevented a more catastrophic outcome.
