Liton Ruled Out, Mahidul Called Up

The Bangladesh national cricket team have undergone a significant reshuffle ahead of their upcoming tour of Zimbabwe, with captain and wicketkeeper-batter Liton Das ruled out due to a muscle injury sustained during the recent limited-overs series against Australia. His absence has opened the door for young wicketkeeper-batter Mahidul Islam, who has been drafted into the Test squad as a direct replacement.

Liton’s injury occurred during the third One Day International against Australia, where he suffered a muscle strain that subsequently forced him to miss the T20I leg of the series as well. Despite ongoing medical supervision under the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) medical panel, concerns over his recovery timeline have ruled him out of the Zimbabwe tour in its entirety. His absence is a notable setback for Bangladesh, particularly given his dual role as a leading batter and first-choice wicketkeeper.

In response, selectors moved swiftly to include Mahidul Islam in the Test setup. The 28-year-old, who made his Test debut in 2024 against South Africa, now returns to the longest format after a brief wait for his second opportunity. His inclusion is seen not only as a replacement decision but also as part of a broader developmental strategy aimed at strengthening squad depth in the wicketkeeping department.

The upcoming tour features a packed itinerary, including one Test match, three One Day Internationals, and three T20 Internationals. The solitary Test is scheduled to begin on 28 June in Harare, where Bangladesh will face Zimbabwe national cricket team.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has already departed with a portion of the Test squad, as the team begins its acclimatisation phase in African conditions. Team management is reportedly reassessing combinations, particularly in the middle order and wicketkeeping role, to compensate for Liton’s absence.

Selectors believe Mahidul’s recent domestic performances have earned him this recall, and the tour presents an important opportunity for him to establish himself as a long-term option. The management is also keen to use this series to build squad depth and test emerging players under international pressure.

The tour is expected to be an important assessment phase for several fringe players aiming to cement their places in the national setup.
