Massive Haul of Counterfeit Medicine Seized in Cumilla

Law enforcement agencies in Cumilla have intercepted a major consignment of counterfeit and unauthorised medicines during a coordinated raid based on intelligence provided by the National Security Intelligence (NSI). The joint operation led to the recovery of a massive cache of spurious drugs, raw chemical materials, manufacturing machinery, and packaging paraphernalia. One individual was arrested at the scene for his alleged involvement in the illicit trade.

The targeted operation commenced at 6:00 pm on Friday (26 June) and concluded at midnight, spanning six hours of meticulous searching. Acting on a precise tip-off, security forces set up a checkpoint in the Sriballabhpur area, adjacent to the Paduar Bazar Bishwaroad in the city. Officers intercepted a suspicious pick-up van navigating the area, which, upon thorough inspection, was found to be transporting the illegal cargo.

A detailed search of the vehicle yielded 18,660 pieces of counterfeit and unlicenced capsules, tablets, and syrups formulated for both children and adults. In addition to the finished pharmaceutical products, authorities discovered approximately 100 kilograms of chemical powder and seven litres of liquid chemicals intended for drug formulation. The haul also contained extensive packaging materials, including around 20,000 counterfeit medicine labels and 15 kilograms of foil paper, alongside three specialised machines used directly in the manufacturing process.

Preliminary police investigations indicate that the detained individual is a key member of an organised syndicate specialising in the production and illicit distribution of fake pharmaceuticals. This network has reportedly been replicating life-saving medications and supplying them to unsuspecting retail pharmacies across suburban and rural markets. Public health experts warn that such counterfeit drugs pose severe health risks, ranging from treatment failure to acute organ toxicity, as they are manufactured without quality control or authorised active ingredients.

Confirming the successful raid, Rokibul Islam, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadar Dakshin Model Thana, stated that a formal case has been registered under the prevailing laws. He added that the seized materials are currently in police custody, and a comprehensive investigation is underway to trace the broader network, identify the manufacturing hubs, and apprehend remaining members of the syndicate.
