Measles-Related Deaths Rise Across Bangladesh

Deaths linked to measles symptoms and suspected complications have continued to rise across Bangladesh, with four more children reported dead in the last 24 hours, according to a health bulletin issued by the Directorate General of Health Services on Monday (29 June).

During the same 24-hour period, 1,145 new infections or suspected cases were recorded nationwide, reflecting an ongoing and concerning spread of the disease. Health officials noted that while deaths have been associated with measles-like symptoms, none of the recent fatalities have been conclusively confirmed as directly caused by measles infection.

Since 15 March, the cumulative figures paint a worrying picture. A total of 623 children have died with measles-related symptoms, while a further 93 children are confirmed to have died due to measles infection. Taken together, the total number of child deaths linked either directly or indirectly to the disease now stands at 716 over this period.

The latest daily update also shows 141 children newly diagnosed with measles, alongside 1,004 cases presenting with measles-related symptoms. Hospital pressure remains significant, with 962 children admitted within the same 24-hour window. At the same time, 1,041 children were discharged after receiving treatment, indicating ongoing patient turnover in health facilities.

According to official data, since 15 March the country has recorded a total of 100,211 suspected measles cases. Of these, 11,851 have been laboratory-confirmed as measles infections. The scale of hospitalisation has also been substantial, with 83,806 patients admitted so far. Encouragingly, 80,193 of those patients have recovered sufficiently to be discharged.

The continued rise in suspected cases and symptom-related deaths highlights the strain on healthcare services, particularly paediatric wards, which are managing large numbers of young patients. Public health experts have long stressed that measles spreads rapidly in under-immunised communities and can lead to serious complications, especially among children with weakened immunity or limited access to timely medical care.

Health authorities are continuing surveillance and response efforts as the situation develops, while hospitals across the country remain on alert to manage new admissions and potential complications arising from the ongoing outbreak.
