The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has announced that the southwest monsoon has entered the country and begun spreading across several regions, albeit approximately one week later than its usual arrival date. The monsoon made landfall through the Teknaf area in the southeastern part of the country on Saturday. According to the meteorological office, rainfall increased across the country on Sunday, and further precipitation is expected on Monday, primarily in areas under the direct influence of the monsoon.
Meteorologists have noted that the arrival of the monsoon does not automatically guarantee widespread rainfall across the entire country. The newly arrived monsoon winds are currently interacting with an active western low-pressure system. This interaction could potentially cause a temporary reduction in rainfall over the next few days. Consequently, the precipitation currently being experienced in various regions is attributed to the western low-pressure system rather than the monsoon itself.
BMD meteorologist Kazi Jebunnesa confirmed that the monsoon has expanded across the southeastern and southern coastal areas of Bangladesh. Speaking to the media on Monday, she specified that the monsoon has spread over Chittagong and its adjacent territories, as well as the coastal district of Satkhira in the south. Under its influence, these specific areas are anticipated to receive rainfall on Monday, while other parts of the country may experience isolated showers.
Temperature Trends and Heatwave Criteria
Despite the rainfall, overall temperatures across the country are not expected to decrease significantly on Monday. In certain regions, temperatures may rise in an isolated manner. On Sunday, the country’s highest temperature was recorded in Rajshahi at $36.5^\circ\text{C}$. Two other locations also recorded temperatures reaching $36^\circ\text{C}$.
Although a temperature of $36^\circ\text{C}$ or above typically qualifies as a mild heatwave, the meteorological office has refrained from declaring an official heatwave because these high temperatures remained isolated and scattered.
Capital City Forecast
The meteorological office issued a short-term forecast for Dhaka and its surrounding areas, valid for the hours following 7:00 am on Monday, indicating a possibility of rain or thundershowers. However, Kazi Jebunnesa clarified that whilst rain is likely in the areas surrounding the capital, the probability of rainfall within Dhaka city itself remains low. On Sunday, the maximum temperature in the capital was recorded at $35.2^\circ\text{C}$. Despite the lack of an official heatwave, residents continue to experience high levels of discomfort due to the heat.
