New Zealand were bowled out for 198 runs after being put under sustained pressure by Bangladesh’s bowling attack, with Nahid Rana producing a decisive five-wicket haul. His pace and bounce proved central as the visiting side’s innings unravelled in a disciplined bowling display.
The innings began in highly restrictive fashion for New Zealand. Openers Henry Nicholls and Nick Kelly struggled from the outset, managing only four runs from the first 28 deliveries. Bangladesh’s new-ball bowlers maintained tight control, with Shoriful Islam and Taskin Ahmed both delivering maiden overs in the second and third overs respectively, further intensifying the pressure on the batting side.
Just as New Zealand attempted to stabilise and increase their scoring rate, Nahid Rana made an immediate impact. He dismissed Henry Nicholls LBW with his very first delivery. In his next over, he struck again on the first ball, removing Will Young. Rana continued his influence later in the innings by also dismissing Mohammad Abbas, maintaining consistent breakthroughs during his spells. In addition, Soumya Sarkar accounted for captain Tom Latham, further disrupting New Zealand’s top order.
Amid regular wickets falling around him, Nick Kelly played a lone resistance for New Zealand. He scored 83 runs from 102 deliveries, registering his first half-century in his five-match ODI career. His innings came to an end when he was caught at midwicket by Towhid Hridoy off Shoriful Islam. At that stage, New Zealand were reduced to 145 for five.
Following Kelly’s dismissal, the lower order failed to offer sustained resistance. Rishad Hossain made an immediate impact upon returning to the attack, inducing a catch from Clarkson at backward point, taken by Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Nahid Rana then claimed his fourth wicket by dismissing Foxcroft, who was caught at square leg by Miraz. Shoriful Islam’s slower delivery accounted for Tickner, who was caught at midwicket by substitute fielder Afif Hossain.
Rana completed his five-wicket haul by bowling Jayden Lennox, sealing New Zealand’s innings for 198. This marked his second five-wicket achievement in One Day Internationals. His previous five-wicket performance came on 11 March at Mirpur against Pakistan, where he recorded figures of 5 for 24.
