A late-night anti-narcotics operation in the Fatullah area of Narayanganj turned violent when police officers came under an armed attack, leaving five members of the force injured. Authorities have since arrested three suspected drug traffickers, including a locally known figure identified as Fighter Monir, and seized a substantial quantity of cannabis during the operation.
According to police sources, the incident occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Saturday in the Masdair Gudaraghat area of Fatullah. Acting on intelligence reports, a police team led by Sub-Inspector (SI) Nandan Sarkar conducted a raid at a location that law enforcement officials alleged had been operating as a drug distribution point for an extended period.
During the operation, officers detained three individuals: Fighter Monir, 38, Naim, 28, and Masum, 24. Police reported recovering 15 kilograms of cannabis from the suspects. The seizure is considered significant within the context of ongoing efforts to curb the illegal drug trade in the region.
However, the situation escalated shortly after the arrests. News of the detention reportedly spread rapidly throughout the neighbourhood, prompting a group of Monir’s associates to gather and confront the police team. Witnesses and police officials stated that the attackers launched a coordinated assault, firing between 10 and 12 rounds at officers while also hurling bricks and other projectiles.
The attack created a highly tense situation, forcing officers to take defensive measures. Police stated that, in self-defence and to restore order, members of the force discharged two rounds from a shotgun. During the ensuing confrontation, arrested suspect Fighter Monir sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, allegedly from gunfire originating from the attackers.
Following the exchange, the assailants fled the scene, allowing police to regain control of the area and secure the detained suspects. Emergency arrangements were made to transport the injured officers to Khanpur Hospital in Narayanganj, where they received medical treatment.
The injured personnel were identified as SI Nandan Sarkar, SI Monir, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Kamrul Hasan, ASI Monir Hossain, and Constable Ashik. Officials familiar with the matter said that all five officers were in stable condition following treatment.
