The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has conducted a sweeping anti-narcotics operation at the Tongi Railway Junction and its surrounding areas in Gazipur. The intensive raid resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of illicit substances and the arrest of 11 individuals. Following their apprehension, the suspects were immediately tried by a mobile court and handed down varying prison sentences based on the severity of their offences.
The targeted operation commenced at 8:30 pm on Monday and concluded around 9:45 pm, focusing entirely on the high-traffic railway station precinct. This transport hub has long been monitored by law enforcement due to its susceptibility to illicit trafficking. A large contingent of security personnel participated in the action, which was spearheaded by Lieutenant Colonel Niamul Halim, the Commanding Officer of RAB-1, alongside Shahidul Islam, the Company Commander of CPC-2. To ensure comprehensive coverage and logistical support, officers from the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) and the Tongi East Police Station worked in close coordination with the elite battalion.
During the hour-long sweep of the platforms, tracks, and adjacent informal settlements, security forces intercepted various consignments of contraband. The seized items included yaba tablets, cannabis, and specialized narcotic injections, indicating a pervasive network of local distribution. Eleven individuals caught in direct connection with the possession and sale of these banned substances were taken into custody on the spot.
“This operation forms part of the government’s strict zero-tolerance policy against narcotics. Such crackdowns will continue unabated until drug trafficking networks are thoroughly dismantled.” — Lieutenant Colonel Niamul Halim, Commanding Officer of RAB-1
Immediately following the conclusion of the raid, the RAB Headquarters Executive Magistrate, Abu Hasan, convened a mobile court directly at the location to expedite legal proceedings. This administrative tribunal evaluated the specific criminal involvement of each of the 11 detainees, subsequently sentencing them to varying terms of imprisonment.
Local authorities emphasize that transport hubs like Tongi are frequently exploited by drug syndicates to move contraband from border regions into the capital. The success of Monday’s joint operation highlights the growing emphasis on inter-agency collaboration to disrupt these supply chains. Lieutenant Colonel Niamul Halim reiterated that the state remains committed to its zero-tolerance framework regarding narcotics, confirming that similar surprise raids are planned for other critical transit points across Gazipur in the coming weeks.
