In Betagi, Barguna, activists of the banned Student League protested on Wednesday evening by setting bus tyres alight on the Betagi-Barguna regional highway. The demonstration occurred at around 8 pm near Belibridge in Betagi town, the Kachua Ferry Ghat area, and the Chandkhali highway junction.
According to local sources, the interim government recently suspended Student League activities temporarily. In protest against the upcoming Awami League ‘Dhaka Lockdown’ programme on 13 November, some former Student League members staged the road blockade.
Their actions halted traffic and sparked unrest in the area. Betagi police arrived shortly after receiving reports, by which time the protesters had dispersed. Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Moniruzzaman stated, “A group of youths suddenly took to the highway, attempting to create disorder by setting tyres on fire. They fled before we could reach them. The situation is now under control, and police remain on alert to prevent any sabotage.”
Meanwhile, commuters and local residents faced significant disruption. Several passenger buses and goods vehicles were delayed until police intervention restored normal traffic. The area, however, remains unusually quiet.
