A woman has been taken into police custody after allegedly severing her sleeping husband’s genitals with a razor blade in a shocking incident in Bhanga Upazila of Faridpur early on Monday morning.
The victim, 30-year-old Hanif Sheikh, a cosmetics trader, sustained critical injuries and was initially rushed to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex before being referred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment due to the severity of his condition.
The incident occurred at a rented ground-floor flat in the Hogladangi Sadardi area of Bhanga municipality, where Hanif and his second wife, Sumaiya Akter Sumi, had been living together. Hanif is the son of Rafiq Sheikh of Brahmankanda village under Manikdi Union in Bhanga Upazila, while Sumi is the daughter of Nurul Islam Sardar from Phulsuti village in Nagarkanda Upazila.
According to the owner of the building, who also serves as an assistant land officer, the couple had engaged in a heated argument the previous night. In the early hours of Monday, while Hanif was asleep, Sumi allegedly used a sharp razor blade to inflict the grievous injury.
Neighbours rushed to the flat after hearing Hanif’s screams and immediately arranged for his rescue. As his condition deteriorated after initial treatment at the local health complex, doctors transferred him to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for specialised care.
Local residents restrained the accused woman at the scene and contacted the national emergency service by dialling 999. Police from Bhanga Police Station subsequently arrived and took her into custody for questioning.
A local businessman, Zahid, claimed that Hanif had relationships with multiple women and that disputes over these alleged affairs frequently caused tension between him and his wives. According to the resident, disagreements within the family had occurred on several occasions before the incident.
Speaking after her detention, Sumi made a series of serious allegations against her husband. She claimed that Hanif had married three times and alleged that one of his wives had previously taken her own life because of his behaviour. She further accused him of maintaining relationships with other women despite repeated objections.
Sumi also alleged that she had been subjected to prolonged domestic abuse. According to her statement, Hanif regularly burned her with lit mosquito coils, leaving injuries on various parts of her body. She claimed that years of alleged physical abuse and emotional distress pushed her beyond her limit, leading her to attack him with a razor blade while he was asleep.
Police have not independently verified these allegations, and they remain part of the accused woman’s statement.
Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman of Bhanga Police Station confirmed that officers responded to a 999 emergency call and detained the woman from the scene. He said that no formal written complaint had yet been filed. Once a complaint is received, police will launch a formal investigation and take legal action in accordance with the findings.
The incident has drawn widespread attention in the locality because of its brutality. Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the couple’s relationship, including the allegations of domestic violence and marital disputes, before determining the appropriate legal course.
