Tamim Awarded MCC Honorary Life Membership

Former Bangladesh captain and current Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Tamim Iqbal has been awarded Honorary Life Membership by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), joining an exclusive group of distinguished cricketers recognised for their outstanding contributions to the game.

The prestigious honour was announced by the MCC in a statement on Sunday. Alongside Tamim, the club also conferred Honorary Life Membership on New Zealand stars Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine, former Australia international Mel Jones, and India’s accomplished Test batter Cheteshwar Pujara.

The recognition is regarded as one of cricket’s most respected honours, with the MCC traditionally awarding Honorary Life Membership to players and individuals who have made a lasting impact on the sport through exceptional performances and distinguished service.

Tamim becomes only the second Bangladeshi cricketer to receive the honour after Shakib Al Hasan, further cementing his place among the country’s most celebrated cricketing figures.

Widely regarded as one of Bangladesh’s greatest-ever batters, Tamim enjoyed a career spanning more than a decade and established himself as one of the pillars of the national side across all three formats. Renowned for his elegant stroke play and attacking approach at the top of the order, he played a central role in many of Bangladesh’s most memorable victories on the international stage.

In Test cricket, Tamim scored more than 5,000 runs, making him the second-highest run-scorer for Bangladesh in the format. His achievements include one of the most iconic innings by a Bangladeshi batter at the Home of Cricket, Lord’s, where he struck a memorable century against England in 2010. That innings earned him a place on the famous Lord’s Honours Boards, a distinction reserved for players who score a century or take a five-wicket haul in a Test match at the historic venue.

Tamim’s impact was even more significant in One-Day Internationals (ODIs). He amassed more than 8,000 runs in 243 ODI appearances, making him Bangladesh’s highest run-scorer in the format. Throughout his career, he consistently provided stability at the top of the batting order and became one of the country’s most dependable performers in major international tournaments.

His achievements also earned global recognition. In 2011, Tamim was named one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year, while he also received Wisden‘s Test Cricketer of the Year honour in recognition of his outstanding performances during that period.

The MCC’s latest list of Honorary Life Members reflects both excellence on the field and significant contributions to international cricket. New Zealand veterans Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine have also been recognised as they prepare to bring their international careers to a close following the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. The pair have been among the leading figures in women’s cricket for more than a decade and are widely credited with helping elevate the profile of the women’s game around the world.

Australia’s former international Mel Jones, who has continued to contribute to cricket as a broadcaster and administrator following her playing career, also received the distinction. India’s Cheteshwar Pujara, celebrated for his resilience and consistency in Test cricket, completes the list of this year’s honorary life members.

For Tamim, the recognition adds another milestone to an already distinguished career. Having served Bangladesh with distinction as both an opening batter and national captain, and now leading the Bangladesh Cricket Board, the Honorary Life Membership acknowledges not only his impressive statistical achievements but also his enduring influence on the development and stature of Bangladeshi cricket on the global stage.

The latest honour reinforces Tamim’s legacy as one of the defining figures in Bangladesh’s cricket history and places him among an elite group of players whose contributions have been recognised by one of the sport’s oldest and most prestigious institutions.
