Tamim Confirms Election Participation

Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has reaffirmed his intention to contest the upcoming Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) election, stating that he has not considered resigning from his current role as head of the board’s ad hoc committee ahead of the polls.

On 7 April, the National Sports Council (NSC) dissolved the previous BCB board of directors and formed an 11-member ad hoc committee for a three-month term. The committee was established under the leadership of former national team captain Aminul Islam Bulbul, while Tamim Iqbal was appointed as the head of the newly formed committee.

The principal responsibility of the ad hoc committee is to organise and oversee the next BCB election within the stipulated three-month period. In addition to managing day-to-day administrative affairs during this interim phase, the committee is expected to prepare the framework necessary for the election of a new board.

A BCB board meeting is scheduled for Sunday, 3 May, where decisions regarding the date and schedule of the next election are expected to be discussed and finalised. Tamim confirmed that the meeting would play a key role in determining the timeline for the electoral process.

Tamim had previously announced his intention to contest the forthcoming election. However, questions had emerged over whether he would need to step down from the ad hoc committee before participating as a candidate.

Addressing the issue during a press conference at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Thursday, 30 April, Tamim dismissed suggestions that he had considered resignation.

He said: “I personally never thought about resigning. I will definitely participate in the election. Whatever is permitted by the constitution, I will follow that. I never considered resigning from the ad hoc committee. From the very first day, I said that I would participate in the election.”

Tamim also commented on the importance of holding a credible electoral process, noting that fairness in the upcoming election remains a central objective of the current administration.

He added: “We have spoken so much about fair elections. I hope that, under our leadership, there will be a fair election, Inshallah.”

The formation of the interim committee represents a transitional period for Bangladesh cricket administration, with the upcoming election expected to determine the next permanent leadership of the BCB.

Tamim’s latest remarks make clear that, despite serving in a leadership role within the temporary board structure, he currently sees no need to resign before entering the election race, provided his participation remains consistent with the BCB constitution.
