Test Plans Uncertain for Rashid Khan

The Test future of Afghanistan’s leading spinner Rashid Khan has come under renewed assessment as concerns persist over his back condition and the demands of multi-format cricket. The Afghanistan management has indicated that player welfare and long-term availability will take precedence over immediate selection pressures.

Rashid, who is currently featuring in the Indian Premier League for Gujarat Titans, is managing an ongoing back issue that has prompted medical caution regarding his workload, particularly in the longer format of the game. While he remains committed to international cricket, he has suggested that limiting his participation in Test matches may be necessary to extend his overall career.

The spinner recently disclosed medical advice that questioned the suitability of continuing in red-ball cricket. He stated: “The doctor told me, ‘If you do not want to play cricket, then continue playing red-ball cricket.’ Because it will not be good for you. You will not be able to play for Afghanistan for a long time.’” He also referred to a heavy workload in a Test against Zimbabwe, noting: “67 (55) overs” across two innings, which reportedly led to concern from his medical advisor.

These developments have placed his availability for Afghanistan’s scheduled one-off Test against India in June in doubt. Any final decision is expected to depend on medical evaluations, workload monitoring, and consultations between selectors and the coaching staff of the Afghanistan national cricket team.

Afghanistan head coach Richard Pybus has supported a cautious and structured approach to Rashid’s involvement. He emphasised that long-term health considerations must outweigh short-term selection needs, particularly given the player’s injury history and central importance to the team across formats.

Pybus stated: “I’m sure that there will be discussions around playing one Test a year about which Test does he play? But you know, there’s a health issue with Rashid. We have to think about his long-term health outside of cricket as well.”

He further added that decisions must be based on physical condition and structured workload management: “It all depends on his physical condition. I have not yet had discussions with the selectors about multi-format players. But given his back issues and where he has come from, it is a player-management issue.”

He also warned against unsustainable workload demands: “Nobody wants to put a player in a situation where their long-term health is compromised because of workload that is not sustainable.”

Pybus is currently in Afghanistan, where he has engaged in meetings with selectors and officials from both international and domestic cricket departments, and has visited the High Performance Centre in Kabul as part of preparations for upcoming training and skill development camps.

Rashid has also indicated that his longer-term focus includes preparation for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, suggesting that format prioritisation may form part of his career planning strategy moving forward.
