A 25-year-old hotel employee has died following a violent altercation over cleaning duties at a hotel in the Khaparpada Mor area of Rangpur city, Bangladesh. The incident has led to the arrest of a 28-year-old man, identified as the son of the hotel owner, who has reportedly admitted involvement during initial police questioning.
The incident occurred at around 9:00 pm on Tuesday (16 June) at a hotel situated near College Road in the Khaparpada Mor area. The deceased, Md Shaon, hailed from the Aditmari upazila of Lalmonirhat district and had been working at the establishment for an extended period.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, the confrontation began when an argument broke out between Shaon and Monu Mia over the disposal and cleaning of hotel waste. What initially appeared to be a minor disagreement quickly escalated into a heated exchange. As tensions rose, Shaon attempted to leave the scene, but the situation allegedly turned violent when Monu Mia struck him with a sharp weapon.
Bystanders rushed to rescue the injured worker and transported him to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. However, doctors on duty declared him dead upon arrival. News of the incident quickly spread, causing alarm among local residents. Law enforcement officers later arrived at the scene, brought the situation under control, and launched an initial investigation.
Monu Mia, aged 28 and a resident of the Khaparpada Mor Station Road area, is the son of local hotel owner Amir Hossain. Police stated that he attempted to flee after the incident but was subsequently detained by a team from the Rangpur Metropolitan Detective Police with assistance from local residents. He was later taken into custody for interrogation.
Officials confirmed that during questioning, the accused admitted responsibility for the incident. However, investigators are continuing to examine whether any prior dispute or underlying tension contributed to the fatal confrontation.
A senior officer from the Detective Branch of Rangpur Metropolitan Police noted that the accused had been interrogated and had acknowledged his involvement. He added that further information is being gathered as part of the ongoing investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Meanwhile, the Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Police Station stated that formal legal proceedings would proceed once a murder case is filed by the victim’s family. He further confirmed that the case would be investigated thoroughly and submitted to court in accordance with legal procedures.
