Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a distinguished 16-year career at the highest level of the game.
Williamson represented New Zealand in all three international formats and leaves the sport as the country’s highest run-scorer. Across 378 international matches, he accumulated 19,346 runs, including 48 centuries and six double centuries. His record places him among the most productive and consistent batters in New Zealand cricket history.
The right-handed batter was a central figure in New Zealand’s international setup for more than a decade. In addition to his achievements with the bat, he also played a significant leadership role. From 2016 to 2024, Williamson captained New Zealand across all three formats of international cricket.
Under his leadership, New Zealand enjoyed one of the most successful periods in its cricketing history. The team reached two ICC World Cup finals during his tenure as captain. New Zealand also secured the ICC World Test Championship title in 2021, marking a major achievement for the national side in the longest format of the game.
Williamson’s influence extended beyond statistics. Throughout his captaincy, he was a key figure in guiding the team through major international tournaments and bilateral series. His leadership period coincided with several notable performances by New Zealand on the global stage.
The retirement announcement follows an earlier decision regarding his T20 international career. In November last year, Williamson announced his retirement from T20 internationals. His latest decision means he has now concluded his entire international career.
Explaining his decision, Williamson said he had been considering retirement for a considerable period. He stated that he believed the present moment was the right time to step away from international cricket. According to Williamson, the hunger and intensity required to continue competing at international level were no longer at the same level as before, leading him to choose what he described as a respectful departure from the game.
