Woman Seriously Injured in Habiganj Acid Attack

A female factory worker has sustained severe facial injuries after her former husband allegedly threw acid at her face in the Habiganj Sadar Upazila. Due to the critical nature of her condition, she has been transferred to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka for advanced medical treatment.

The incident occurred on Thursday, 4 June, at approximately 21:00 in the Borobohula area of the Sadar Upazila.

The victim has been identified as twenty-eight-year-old Rubina Akhter, a resident of the Borobohula locality. She is employed as a labourer at the local PRAN company plant.

According to police records and local sources, Rubina Akhter was previously married to Uzzal Miah, the son of the late Abdul Barik, hailing from Anandapur village. The details of those involved are outlined in the table below:

Circumstances of the Attack

On Thursday evening, Rubina Akhter was returning home after finishing her shift at the factory, following her usual route. As she drew near her residence in the Borobohula area, her former husband, Uzzal Miah, who was allegedly lying in wait, launched a sudden attack by throwing acid at her face.

Upon hearing her screams, local residents rushed to the scene to assist her. Sensing the arrival of the public, the accused fled the location immediately.

Medical Response and Police Investigation

Local residents rescued the severely injured victim and transported her to the Habiganj District Sadar Hospital. Given the deterioration of her condition, the attending physicians directed that she be referred immediately to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka for emergency specialist care.

The attack has sparked widespread resentment and anger within the local community. Confirming the details of the crime, the Additional Superintendent of Police for the Habiganj Sadar Circle, Md. Shahidul Haque Munshi, stated that an acid or acid-like corrosive substance had been thrown at one side of the woman’s face whilst she was on her way home.

The police official further added:

“We are thoroughly investigating the entire matter. The accused individual has already been identified, and efforts are actively underway to apprehend him.”
