The Incident and Investigation
The criminal activity originated on 6 May in Ghoramara village. According to the formal complaint, a red bull belonging to a local resident, Shushankar Mandal, was stolen from the front of his residence at approximately 3:30 pm. The theft was executed with considerable stealth, but the perpetrators failed to evade surveillance.
CCTV footage from the vicinity captured the moment of the theft, clearly showing Sohel and several other accomplices involved in the act. Once this footage was circulated via various media outlets and social platforms, it sparked significant public discourse and prompted immediate police intervention.
Police Operation and Recovery
Utilising information technology and intelligence gathering, the Sirajdikhan police conducted a raid on an abandoned building in Hajigaon, where Sohel was initially detained. Subsequent interrogations led officers to the residence of Makbul.
During the search of Makbul’s property, police confirmed that the stolen bull had already been slaughtered for the sale of its meat. Officers recovered four hooves of the animal from a refrigerator and seized 5,675 BDT in cash, which is believed to be the proceeds from the illegal sale of the beef.
Legal Proceedings
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sirajdikhan Police Station, Md. Abdul Hannan, confirmed that the arrests were made following the written complaint submitted by the victim, Shushankar Mandal. Following the completion of preliminary interrogations and the documentation of seized evidence, both suspects were processed through the standard legal channels and forwarded to the court for further judicial proceedings.
The authorities have indicated that the investigation remains ongoing to identify and apprehend any further individuals who may have assisted in the logistics of the theft or the distribution of the stolen goods. Such incidents of cattle rustling are viewed with gravity in rural communities, where livestock represents a primary financial asset for residents.
