11-Year European Final Drought, Still Barcelona Match Europe’s Best

FC Barcelona have not reached a UEFA Champions League final since 2015, when they defeated Juventus to secure their fifth European title. That triumph now stands as a reference point in a period spanning 11 seasons without a return to the final stage of the competition.

In the current campaign, Barcelona’s run in Europe concluded at the quarter-final stage. They were eliminated 3–2 on aggregate by a Madrid-based opponent, ending another attempt to progress deep into the knockout rounds.

Despite the outcome, head coach Hansi Flick has remained publicly confident about the team’s standing in European football. The 61-year-old German coach, who previously guided Bayern Munich to major domestic and continental success, including the UEFA Champions League title, has consistently defended his squad’s competitiveness at the highest level.

Flick’s comments came during a Champions League season marked by a notable semi-final first leg between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain. The match, played at the Parc des Princes, ended 5–4 in favour of PSG, setting a record for the highest-scoring Champions League semi-final. Flick observed the match following Barcelona’s elimination and expressed disappointment at Bayern’s defeat, reflecting his previous managerial connection with the German club.

Barcelona’s European trajectory since their 2015 triumph has included intermittent progress but no return to the final. The club has reached the semi-finals twice in that period but failed to advance further on both occasions. In addition, they dropped into the UEFA Europa League in both the 2022 and 2023 seasons after failing to progress beyond the Champions League group stage.

Under Flick’s management, Barcelona have shown competitive form in European knockout football but have not yet translated that into silverware or final appearances. Their most recent exit came after a tightly contested two-legged quarter-final, which they lost 3–2 on aggregate to a Madrid-based side.

When asked about Barcelona’s ability to compete with Europe’s leading clubs, including PSG and Bayern Munich, Flick gave a direct assessment, stating: “100 per cent, yes.”

Barcelona’s record in Europe since 2015 reflects a pattern of intermittent deep runs but repeated elimination before the final. Despite this, Flick’s assessment underlines his belief that the squad retains the capacity to compete with Europe’s strongest sides.
