Toya Prioritises Craft Over Quick Fame

Actress Mumtahina Chowdhury Toya has made it clear that her career choices are now guided by artistic integrity rather than fleeting popularity. First stepping into the spotlight in 2010 after winning the reality talent hunt Lux-Channel i Superstar, Toya quickly became a familiar face on Bangladeshi television through dramas, advertisements, and hosting engagements. Her natural screen presence and measured performances earned her a loyal audience early on.

In recent years, however, Toya has appeared less frequently on screen. The absence was deliberate. She chose to step back from repetitive roles, allowing herself time for family and for reassessing her creative priorities. Now, nearly two years later, she is returning to drama with renewed purpose in the Eid special telefilm Golap Ar Kanta, directed by Ferdous Hasan. The production recently wrapped filming in Uttara, Dhaka.

In the drama, Toya stars opposite Rashed Zaman Shawon, portraying a married couple navigating affection, misunderstandings, and the subtle tensions that arise from differences in generational outlook. Veteran performers Abul Hayat and Dilara Zaman play senior family members, adding emotional depth and gravitas to the narrative. The story focuses on domestic intimacy rather than spectacle, a quality Toya says drew her to the project.

Reflecting on her return, Toya remarked that being back in front of the camera felt invigorating. Although she made a brief appearance in an item song last year, this marks her first full-fledged acting role since her hiatus. She credits the thoughtful script, refined direction, and collaborative atmosphere on set for rekindling her enthusiasm. Working alongside seasoned actors, she noted, enriched the experience and sharpened her own performance.

Toya has been candid about why she stepped away. Playing similar characters repeatedly had begun to feel creatively limiting. She felt the need to pause, recalibrate, and wait for roles that would allow her to explore new dimensions. “Quality matters more than quantity,” she has emphasised, adding that she no longer chases attention through constant visibility. Instead, she hopes audiences will rediscover her through nuanced, memorable work.

This Eid, viewers will see her in a single drama, alongside select hosting appearances in special programmes. Beyond television, Toya is also developing fresh plans for her personal YouTube channel, signalling a desire to engage audiences on her own terms. On the big screen, she was last seen in Bengali Beauty, a performance that received positive attention. Several film offers are currently under consideration, and she has indicated that her next cinematic project will depend on careful script evaluation.
