Minister Orders Officials to Reject Unjust Political Demands

In a robust directive aimed at upholding the rule of law, the Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism, Afroza Khanam Rita, has issued a stern warning to administrative and law enforcement officials in Manikganj. Speaking at an exchange of views meeting on Sunday, 8th March, the Minister instructed Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) and Officers-in-Charge (OCs) to categorically reject any “unjust demands” or coercive influence exerted by political activists.

A Mandate for Administrative Independence

The meeting, held at the Baliati Upazila Auditorium in Saturia, served as a platform for the Minister to clarify the government’s stance on partisan interference. Addressing a diverse audience that included civil servants, Union Parishad chairmen, and leaders from the BNP and its affiliate organisations, the Minister emphasised that no political identity provides a shield for unethical conduct.

“If anyone attempts to exploit a political connection to engage in illicit activities, they must face the full force of the law,” Minister Rita asserted. “This applies to everyone—even those closest to me. There is no room for exceptionalism.”

She further empowered officials by providing a direct line of communication, suggesting that if anyone seeks special favours in her name, the relevant officers should contact her personally to verify the claim. This move is seen as a strategic effort to dismantle the culture of “middlemen” and political brokers who often stall administrative processes.

Curbing Interference in Local Governance

The Minister also extended her warning to political activists, advising them to refrain from loitering in police stations or government offices without valid reason. She specifically highlighted the issue of local arbitrations (Salish), instructing leaders to avoid participating in unauthorised or coercive judicial activities that often bypass the formal legal system.

Tourism and Local Development

Beyond administrative reform, Minister Rita touched upon the economic potential of the region. She announced plans to incorporate the historic Baliati Zamindar Bari, a landmark of significant architectural heritage, into the national tourism framework. By developing this site, the Ministry hopes to stimulate the local economy and preserve Saturia’s cultural legacy.

The day concluded with several ceremonial and charitable acts. The Minister inaugurated the foundation stones for several new development projects, participated in a tree-planting initiative, and oversaw the distribution of rice to underprivileged residents. To mark the spirit of the season, she later joined officials and local citizens for an Iftar mahfil at the Saturia Model Mosque.
