In Bagherhat, three individuals were taken into police custody in connection with a reported theft at the residence of Police Inspector General (IGP) Mohammad Ali Hossain Fakir. However, the District Superintendent of Police has clarified that no actual theft occurred at the IGP’s residence. What transpired was instead an accident involving a service cable.
On Wednesday, 18 March, Superintendent of Police Mohammad Hasan Chowdhury issued a press statement to dispel circulating rumours. “Various online platforms and media outlets have reported a theft at the IGP’s residence. Our investigation reveals that these reports are inaccurate. We urge the public not to be misled,” he stated.

According to police sources, local authorities received information on 17 March that an external service cable at the IGP’s residence had been allegedly stolen by unknown persons. A prompt operation was conducted in the surrounding area that same night, resulting in the arrest of three suspects and the recovery of the cable.
The Actual Incident
Superintendent Chowdhury provided further clarification: “On Monday, 16 March, at approximately 11:00 PM, severe stormy weather caused a temporary power disconnection. During this event, a service cable adjacent to the exterior wall of the residence detached and fell to the ground. Subsequently, an unidentified individual took the cable. This was not a theft but a consequence of natural circumstances.”
He emphasised the need for responsible reporting: “Publishing unverified information causes unnecessary public confusion. We caution media organisations to verify facts thoroughly before dissemination.”
Local police acted swiftly to ensure the security of the IGP’s family. The incident underscores the importance of public awareness and accurate reporting, highlighting how misinformation can escalate concerns unnecessarily.
Authorities have assured that they will continue monitoring the situation and enforcing measures to prevent future misunderstandings of this nature.
