A tragic workplace accident in Kachua upazila of Chandpur district has claimed the life of a 45-year-old fish farm labourer, highlighting ongoing safety risks in rural aquaculture operations.
The deceased, identified as Almagir Hossain, son of Mahiuddin from Nijmehar village in neighbouring Shahrasti upazila, had been residing in Koraish village under Kachua municipality for nearly two decades following his marriage. He was employed as a worker at a local fish enclosure owned by a man named Masud.
According to local accounts, the incident occurred late on Saturday night, around 11:30 pm, when Hossain went to inspect the fish enclosure as part of his routine duties. Workers familiar with the situation said he noticed several fish floating lifelessly in the water. In an attempt to collect them, he entered the water, unaware that a damaged and hanging electrical wire had already electrified the pond.
As soon as he stepped into the water, he was reportedly electrocuted and died instantly at the scene. The presence of the broken live wire is believed to have turned the entire fish enclosure into a lethal hazard.
Following the incident, police from Kachua Police Station arrived at the scene and recovered the body from the enclosure before transferring it to the police station for formal procedures. Authorities have since initiated an unnatural death case to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Family members stated that Hossain had built his life in Koraish village after marrying Ayub Ali’s daughter, Kulsum. He is survived by his wife, an 18-year-old son, and a seven-year-old daughter. The sudden death has left his family in deep shock and financial uncertainty.
Local residents expressed concern over the lack of safety measures around electrically powered fish farms, noting that exposed or poorly maintained wiring is not uncommon in such projects.
