Mymensingh Court Sends Harassment Suspect to Prison Following Viral CCTV Footage

A man has been remanded in judicial custody after being arrested for persistent sexual harassment and indecent exposure targeting female students in Mymensingh. The suspect, Mahmudul Hasan, 45, appeared before a court on Thursday, 30 April 2026, following a manhunt that spanned two districts.

Hasan, originally from Belkuchi Upazila in Sirajganj, had been working as a sales assistant at a clothing store in Mymensingh’s Choto Bazar area.

Chronic Harassment Captured on Camera

Investigations suggest that for the past six months, Hasan frequented the area outside a private school in Natun Bazar during the early morning. He allegedly targeted female students arriving for classes, subjected them to lewd gestures, and engaged in obscene conduct.

The situation reached a breaking point on 23 April 2026, when his actions against two students were recorded by the school’s CCTV system. Although school authorities initially detained him, he was released after his employer intervened and Hasan provided a written undertaking (muchleka) promising to cease his behaviour.

Viral Evidence and Police Manhunt

The case took a dramatic turn on Tuesday when the CCTV footage was leaked on social media. The graphic nature of the video caused widespread outrage among parents and local residents, prompting the District Detective Branch (DB) to intervene.

Fearing arrest, Hasan fled Mymensingh. However, using digital tracking and mobile network forensics, police located him in the Enayetpur area of Sirajganj. He was apprehended by the DB and brought back to Mymensingh to face justice.

Legal Charges and Administrative Response

Abdullah Al Mamun, Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration) in Mymensingh, confirmed that Hasan has been charged under Section 10 of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000. This specific provision carries strict penalties for sexual oppression and indecent assault.

“We utilised technological surveillance to track the suspect to Sirajganj,” the Additional SP stated. “Following his production in court today, he has been sent to jail pending trial.”

The incident has sparked calls for increased security around Mymensingh’s educational institutions. In response, the police administration has pledged to intensify patrols during school hours to ensure a safe environment for students.
