Former Member of Parliament and veteran freedom fighter Mosharraf Hossain (aged 78) has died. He passed away at 1:25 am on Saturday (20 June) at LabAid Hospital in Dhaka. He had been suffering from multiple illnesses for an extended period.
According to family sources, he leaves behind his wife, three sons, two daughters, and a large number of admirers. His funeral prayer (Janaza) is scheduled to be held today, Sunday, after Asr prayers at the Alakjander Pilot High School ground in Ramgati upazila of Lakshmipur. He will be laid to rest in his family graveyard following the funeral.
Mosharraf Hossain was widely known for his role in the Liberation War. He served as a zonal commander of the Mujib Bahini (BLF) in Noakhali and Hatiya during the 1971 War of Independence. He was also actively involved in student politics during his academic years and served as the Vice-President (VP) of the Dhaka University Shahidullah Hall Students’ Union.
In his political career, he was elected as a Member of Parliament from Lakshmipur-4 constituency in the 4th National Parliament election in 1988, contesting as a candidate of the Combined Opposition. He also contested the 2024 National Parliament election from the same constituency, Lakshmipur-4 (Ramgati–Komolnagar).

Following his death, several political leaders and public figures expressed condolences. Among them were ABM Ashraf Uddin Nizan, Member of Parliament and Whip of the National Parliament for Lakshmipur-4 (Ramgati–Komolnagar); Major (Retd.) Abdul Mannan, Secretary-General of Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh and former minister; and former MP Abdullah Al Mamun.
Condolences were also expressed by Abu Barkat Dulal, former Chairman of Komolnagar Upazila Parishad and freedom fighter; Maulana Khaled Saifullah, central adviser of Islami Andolan Bangladesh and former Upazila Chairman; Dr Jamal Uddin, President of Ramgati Upazila BNP; Nurul Huda Chowdhury, President of Komolnagar Upazila BNP; and Md Didar Hossain, General Secretary of the same unit.
Leaders from Komolnagar Press Club, including President M A Majid and General Secretary Musakalimullah, also conveyed their condolences. Political parties and organisations including the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) and Bangladesh Socialist Party (BASAD) also issued statements mourning his death.
