A young man was hacked to death after reportedly being chased from the vicinity of an Ashura Tazia procession in the Sutrapur area of Old Dhaka on Friday afternoon, prompting a police investigation into the motive behind the killing.
The fatal attack took place shortly after 5:00 pm beneath a building under construction on BK Das Road. Although the victim was taken to hospital following the assault, he succumbed to his injuries on the way. Police said his identity had not been confirmed immediately after the incident.
According to officials at Sutrapur Police Station, the victim had been accompanying or walking alongside the Ashura Tazia procession when several assailants allegedly pursued him. The attackers then cornered him beneath the unfinished building and repeatedly struck him with sharp weapons, inflicting critical injuries.
Officer-in-Charge Matiur Rahman said police were working to establish the victim’s identity and to trace those responsible for the attack. He added that efforts were under way to determine the circumstances that led to the killing and to arrest everyone involved.
The incident occurred during Ashura, one of the most significant days in the Islamic calendar, particularly for the Shia Muslim community. In Bangladesh, Ashura is traditionally marked by Tazia processions, especially in the historic neighbourhoods of Old Dhaka, where participants commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain at the Battle of Karbala through religious observances and symbolic mourning processions. These events typically draw large crowds and are conducted under heightened security arrangements.
Despite the attack taking place near the procession, senior police officials insisted that there was no evidence at this stage linking the murder directly to the religious event.
Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman of the Lalbagh Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police said the killing had no connection with the Tazia procession itself. According to him, the victim was attacked beneath a building under construction, and investigators were examining the circumstances surrounding the murder independently of the religious gathering.
“We are investigating why the killing occurred and who was involved,” the deputy commissioner said, stressing that all possible motives were being examined.
The incident has raised concerns among local residents, particularly as it unfolded during one of the busiest periods of Ashura observances in the capital. Large public gatherings during religious occasions are routinely accompanied by extensive security measures, including the deployment of police personnel and surveillance in sensitive areas to maintain public order.
Investigators have yet to determine whether the victim was specifically targeted or whether the attack stemmed from a prior dispute. Police have not disclosed any information regarding possible suspects or motives, saying the investigation remains at an early stage.
Authorities expect that witness statements, forensic evidence and nearby surveillance footage will play a crucial role in identifying those responsible. Until the victim’s identity is confirmed and the investigation progresses, police have urged the public to refrain from speculation regarding the motive behind the killing.
The murder remains under active investigation, with law enforcement agencies continuing efforts to identify the deceased, establish the sequence of events and bring the perpetrators to justice.
