Three Bangladeshi Family Members Stabbed to Death in Rome

A horrific knife attack in the Italian capital has left three members of a Bangladeshi expatriate family dead and another fighting for his life. The brutal incident occurred on Friday night inside an apartment on Via Montilio in the Casalotti area, a residential neighbourhood on the outskirts of Rome.

The victims, originally from the Companiganj sub-district of Noakhali in Bangladesh, were found inside their home following a violent assault. Local authorities have launched a full-scale murder investigation, whilst the expatriate community remains in deep shock over the unprecedented violence.

Victims Identified Amid Community Mourning

The deceased have been identified as Kamal Uddin Babul, aged 45, his 38-year-old wife, Momtaz Begum Arju, and their five-year-old daughter, Arifa. The family hailed from Ward 5 of the Charkankra union under Companiganj sub-district.

The couple’s 20-year-old son, Arafat premature Hossein Oyon, survived the initial onslaught but sustained critical injuries. Emergency medical teams rushed him to the renowned Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital in Rome. Hospital sources confirmed that Oyon underwent emergency surgery for multiple stab wounds and is currently monitored under intensive care. His condition remains highly critical.

Discovery and Emergency Response

Neighbours reportedly alerted the emergency services after hearing distressing sounds coming from the flat on Friday evening. Upon breaching the property, first responders discovered a grim scene with four family members lying in pools of blood. Kamal Uddin Babul, his wife, and their young daughter were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Italian law enforcement agencies immediately cordoned off the apartment building to preserve forensic evidence. Specialist homicide detectives and forensic experts spent hours examining the crime scene, collecting fingerprints, and analysing potential entry points. Security camera footage from adjacent streets is being reviewed to trace any suspects who fled the area.

Ongoing Investigation and Motive Unknown

The Italian police are treating the case as a triple homicide but have not yet released an official statement regarding the motive behind this savagery. Detectives are exploring all possibilities, looking into whether the attack was a targeted burglary, a personal vendetta, or a random act of violence. Officials emphasised that definitive conclusions cannot be drawn until the preliminary forensic analysis is complete.

The tragedy is particularly poignant as the family had recently hit a major milestone. Nurul Huda Rakib, the younger brother of the deceased Momtaz Begum Arju, revealed that his brother-in-law and the rest of the family had recently been granted Italian citizenship after living in the country for years.

The Bangladeshi embassy in Rome is reportedly coordinating with Italian authorities to oversee the case. Embassy officials visited the hospital to check on Oyon’s medical progress and are assisting the extended family with the bureaucratic procedures required for cross-border repatriation.

Incidents of such extreme violence involving South Asian expatriate families are rare in Rome. This sudden loss has triggered widespread grief amongst the Bangladeshi diaspora across Italy, with community leaders demanding a swift and thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
