Authorities in Comilla have seized a massive haul of counterfeit and unauthorised medicines, chemical ingredients, and manufacturing machinery during a targeted raid based on intelligence provided by the National Security Intelligence (NSI). A man suspected of being heavily involved in the illicit production and distribution network was arrested during the operation.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Comilla Sadar Dakshin Model Police Station, Mohammad Rokibul Islam, confirmed the details of the breakthrough on Saturday afternoon, 27 June. The law enforcement operation commenced at 6:00 pm on Friday, 26 June, and lasted for five hours, concluding at 11:00 pm. It centred on a stationary pickup van intercepted in the Sriballabhpur area, situated adjacent to the Paduar Bazar Highway.
Acting on precise intelligence that a criminal syndicate was transporting a consignment of spurious pharmaceuticals, a joint team of police and intelligence officers cordoned off the vehicle. A meticulous search of the pickup van led to the discovery of an assortment of fake capsules, tablets, and syrups formulated for both children and adults. In total, 18,660 pieces of finished counterfeit medicines were counted and confiscated.
Beyond the ready-to-sell contraband, the vehicle was packed with raw materials and manufacturing gear, revealing the industrial scale of the illicit operation. The seized items included approximately 100 kilograms of chemical powder used to formulate medicines, 7 litres of liquid chemicals, and roughly 20,000 fraudulent product labels designed to mimic genuine brands. Additionally, officers recovered 15 kilograms of packaging foil paper alongside three specialised machines utilized in the pressing and manufacturing of counterfeit drugs.
The individual detained at the scene has been identified as Junaid Islam, a resident of the Srinibas area under the Sadar Dakshin upazila. Investigators believe he plays a vital role in transporting and supplying these hazardous substances to unsuspecting pharmacies across the region.
Following the completion of the raid, the vehicle and its contents were escorted to the Comilla Sadar Dakshin Model Police Station. An official seizure list was subsequently compiled under the direct supervision and guidance of the Sadar Dakshin Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land), in the presence of Fakhrul Islam, the Assistant Director of the District Drug Administration.
OC Mohammad Rokibul Islam stated that a formal case has been registered at the police station, with Fakhrul Islam acting as the primary complainant. The arrested suspect is scheduled to be produced before the court, whilst law enforcement agencies continue their investigation to locate the manufacturing facility and identify other co-conspirators.
