Four young men were detained by local residents and later handed over to police after a foreign-made revolver and five locally made weapons were allegedly recovered from their possession in Hathazari Upazila of Chattogram.
The incident occurred late on Saturday (27 June) in the Notunpara area of Chikondondi Union, at a house locally known as Alam Company Bari. Police have since taken the suspects into custody and begun legal proceedings against them.
According to local residents, the four men had long been suspected of involvement in a series of robberies targeting garment workers and pedestrians in Hathazari and surrounding areas. Residents claimed the group frequently used weapons to threaten victims before carrying out robberies, although these allegations have not yet been established in court.
Witnesses said the suspects attempted to flee the area on Saturday night after drawing attention from local people. Residents gave chase and eventually cornered them inside a house, where they were detained. During the incident, locals claimed to have recovered one foreign-made revolver along with five locally manufactured weapons from the group before informing the police.
The situation quickly became tense as an angry crowd gathered at the scene. According to witnesses, some members of the public assaulted the four men before officers from Hathazari Model Police Station arrived. Police intervened, rescued the suspects from the crowd and transported them to the police station for their safety and further investigation. The recovered firearms and other weapons were also seized as evidence.
Mohammad Nazmul, Second Officer of Hathazari Model Police Station, confirmed that legal action is being taken against the four detainees. He said the necessary case will be filed before the suspects are produced before the court in accordance with the law.
Police have not released the identities of the suspects, nor have they disclosed whether the foreign-made revolver was legally licensed or connected to any previous criminal incidents. Investigators are expected to examine the recovered weapons and verify the allegations made by local residents as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Law enforcement officials said operations against criminal activities in the area will continue, adding that anyone found involved in offences involving illegal firearms, armed robbery or other serious crimes will face legal action under the country’s existing laws.
