Iyer Equals Kohli’s Unwanted Captaincy Record

India’s defeat to Ireland in the opening Twenty20 International in Belfast not only handed the hosts a famous 34-run victory but also left stand-in captain Shreyas Iyer with an unwanted place in the record books.

Leading India in a T20 International for the first time, Iyer became only the fourth Indian captain to lose on his captaincy debut in the format, joining an unfortunate list that includes former skipper Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill.

Ireland produced one of the biggest upsets in recent T20 International cricket by posting 182 for 9 before dismissing the reigning world champions for 148 in 18.5 overs. The result marked a landmark victory for the home side and an underwhelming start to Iyer’s tenure as captain.

Historically, India’s T20 captains have enjoyed successful starts. Some of the country’s most accomplished leaders, including Virender Sehwag, MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma and Iyer’s immediate predecessor, Suryakumar Yadav, all began their captaincy careers in the shortest format with victories.

The loss in Belfast, however, placed Iyer in a small and unwanted statistical group. Before him, only Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill had suffered defeat in their first match as India’s T20 International captain.

The result was particularly disappointing given the wealth of experience Iyer brought to the role. Selectors entrusted him with the captaincy after he had established himself as one of India’s most dependable middle-order batters across formats and gained considerable leadership experience in domestic and franchise cricket.

By the time he walked out for the toss in Belfast, Iyer had already featured in 114 T20 Internationals for India, making him the country’s most experienced player to take charge of the national T20 side for the first time.

That figure surpassed the previous benchmark held by Rohit Sharma, who had played 80 T20 Internationals before becoming India’s captain in the format. The milestone reflected the selectors’ preference for an experienced campaigner to lead a squad that blended established internationals with emerging talent.

Iyer also became one of India’s oldest first-time T20 International captains. According to the available statistics cited in Indian media, only Shikhar Dhawan and Suryakumar Yadav were older when they first led the national side in the format.

Despite the disappointing outcome, one defeat is unlikely to alter the team’s long-term plans. Iyer remains one of India’s senior players, and the management has consistently emphasised the importance of providing stability and continuity in leadership whenever regular captaincy changes become necessary.

The defeat also intensified scrutiny of India’s team selection after highly rated teenage batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi was left out of the playing XI despite widespread expectations that he would make his international debut. With India’s batting line-up failing to chase down Ireland’s target, questions over the selection decisions quickly became a major talking point alongside the result itself.

India will now look to bounce back in the remaining fixtures of the tour before travelling to England for their next white-ball assignment. For Iyer, the Belfast defeat represents an unwanted statistical milestone, but it also offers an opportunity to respond quickly and demonstrate the leadership qualities that earned him the captaincy in the first place.

While the record books will show that his first outing as India’s T20 captain ended in defeat, Iyer will hope it proves to be nothing more than a temporary setback in what could become a successful leadership career at international level.
