A family in Chandpur’s Hajiganj has been left devastated after two brothers died within hours of one another, turning what began as a day of mourning into an unimaginable tragedy. The back-to-back deaths have cast a deep shadow over relatives, neighbours and the wider local community, who described the incident as one of the most heartbreaking they have witnessed in recent years.
The tragic ঘটনা unfolded on Sunday (28 June) at the residence of the Shuku Commissioner family in Ward No. 11 of Randhunimura, within Hajiganj Municipality.
According to family members, Shahin, the eldest of four brothers and a well-known fish trader at Hajiganj Market, died in the early hours of the morning. Following the Zuhr prayer, relatives, friends and local residents gathered to attend his funeral. He was later laid to rest in the family’s ancestral graveyard.
The family was still struggling to come to terms with Shahin’s death when tragedy struck again. At around 10:50 p.m., his younger brother, Alamgir Hossain, breathed his last after a prolonged illness. He had been receiving medical treatment in Dhaka and had recently returned to his home, where he died surrounded by his loved ones.
Family sources said Shahin was the eldest among the four brothers, while Alamgir was the second eldest. Their deaths, occurring within a matter of hours, have left their elderly mother, one sister, two surviving brothers and numerous relatives mourning an irreplaceable loss. The emotional impact has been particularly severe as the family had scarcely completed the burial of one son before preparing to bid farewell to another.
News of the double bereavement quickly spread throughout the area, drawing condolences from relatives, neighbours, fellow traders and people from various walks of life. Many visited the grieving family to offer prayers and express their sympathy during this exceptionally difficult time.
Local resident Md Jasim Uddin Jony Chowdhury said the incident was almost unprecedented in the community. He remarked that losing two brothers from the same family on the same day was an extraordinarily painful event, adding that the entire neighbourhood had been overwhelmed by sorrow.
The tragedy has deeply affected residents of Hajiganj, many of whom knew the brothers personally through family ties, business and community life. Their passing has prompted an outpouring of support for the bereaved family, with local people praying for the eternal peace of the deceased and strength for those left behind as they cope with their profound loss.
