Doctor Samir Mishu Granted Bail in Bogura Case

A senior physician and local political figure in Bogura, Dr Samir Hossain Mishu, has been released on bail following his arrest under an explosives-related case linked to recent political unrest.

Dr Mishu, widely known in the region as the “doctor of the poor” for his long-standing humanitarian medical service, walked out of Bogura District Jail on Monday morning after securing bail from the court.

His release came after a hearing held on Sunday at the Bogura District and Sessions Judge Court. The bail petition was heard by acting judge Koushik Ahmed, who approved the application, according to his defence counsel Advocate Tanzim Al Mizbah.

Court Inspector Shahidul Islam confirmed that bail had been granted, although he initially noted that immediate confirmation of the prisoner’s release from custody was not available at the time of the ruling.

Dr Mishu was arrested on 23 June around 11:30 pm from a restaurant named ‘Mocktail’ in Sherpur upazila of Bogura. Police later showed him arrested in connection with a case filed at Bogura Sadar Police Station under the Explosives Act, which authorities say is related to incidents stemming from the July political unrest.

According to Sherpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge SM Mainuddin, Dr Mishu had been attending a private family gathering, organised in connection with a physician’s birthday celebration, at the restaurant when the situation escalated. The officer stated that, following reports of a gathering of Bangladesh Nationalist Party supporters outside the venue and concerns over possible disorder, police took him into custody for security reasons and later transferred him to Bogura Sadar Police Station.

The arrest quickly drew public attention, prompting strong reactions on social media. Several individuals, including writer and online activist Pinaki Bhattacharya, publicly questioned the circumstances surrounding the detention and called for his release. The case became a focal point of debate within local online communities, reflecting wider political tensions in the region.

Dr Mishu, a resident of Jaleshwaritola area in Bogura city, previously served as the Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer of Bogura Sadar. Following the political developments associated with the July unrest, he was transferred to the Bagherhat Government Medical Assistants Training School as an instructor.

Over the years, he has built a reputation for providing free medical treatment to impoverished patients and participating in various voluntary and social welfare activities. This work earned him widespread recognition across Bogura as a compassionate and accessible physician, particularly among low-income communities.
