Measles Outbreak Claims Five More Children in Bangladesh

Five more children have died from measles and measles-related complications across Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, as the country continues to face a prolonged outbreak of the highly contagious viral disease. During the same period, 696 new cases of measles infection or measles-like symptoms were reported, according to the latest monitoring data released by health authorities.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said in its regular measles situation report published on Sunday (12 July) that four people died after developing symptoms associated with measles, while one additional death was directly linked to confirmed measles infection. With these latest fatalities, the total number of deaths caused by measles and related complications has risen to 758 since the outbreak monitoring period began on 15 March.

Health officials reported that 90 new measles cases were confirmed in the latest 24-hour period. At the same time, 606 people showed symptoms consistent with measles. Together, the number of newly affected or symptomatic patients increased by 696 in a single day, reflecting the continued pressure on public health services.

Since 15 March, a total of 13,500 people have been diagnosed with measles across the country, while the number of people experiencing measles-like symptoms has reached 111,480. Health authorities have observed that children remain among the most vulnerable groups, with infection rates appearing particularly high in several regions.

The outbreak has also placed a significant burden on hospitals. According to the DGHS report, 94,340 patients with measles or related symptoms have required hospital admission during the period under review. Of them, 90,605 patients have recovered and been discharged after receiving medical care. However, a considerable number of patients are still undergoing treatment at healthcare facilities.

Public health experts describe measles as one of the most contagious viral diseases, capable of spreading rapidly through respiratory droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Children with weakened immunity are at greater risk of developing serious complications, including severe infections and other health problems.

Common symptoms of measles include fever, runny nose, cough, redness of the eyes and a widespread red rash on the body. Medical professionals have stressed that early detection and timely treatment are crucial, especially for young children who may experience more severe illness.

Doctors have advised parents to ensure that children receive recommended vaccinations on schedule and to seek medical attention immediately if symptoms appear. They have also highlighted the importance of maintaining proper nutrition, keeping infected children separated from others when necessary, and monitoring the health of family members who may have been exposed.

The DGHS continues to monitor the outbreak situation nationwide and has intensified efforts to control further transmission. Authorities are focusing on strengthening vaccination activities, identifying cases quickly and ensuring that affected patients receive appropriate medical support.

Health officials have urged parents and caregivers to remain alert, particularly in areas where infections are increasing. They emphasised that widespread awareness, timely vaccination and access to healthcare services remain key measures in protecting children and reducing the impact of the ongoing measles outbreak.
