Measles Death Toll Continues to Climb

Bangladesh continues to face a deepening measles crisis as child deaths linked to the disease show little sign of slowing. According to the latest report from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), seven more children died from measles or measles-like symptoms during the 24-hour period ending at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, while another 990 children were newly reported with suspected infections.

Laboratory testing confirmed that one of the seven children who died had measles. The remaining six children died after developing symptoms consistent with the disease, although laboratory confirmation had not been completed. Health officials said the confirmed fatality was recorded in Dhaka, while four of the six symptom-related deaths occurred in Dhaka Division and the remaining two in Sylhet Division.

The latest figures underline the continuing pressure on Bangladesh’s public health system despite the ongoing nationwide vaccination campaign. Public health experts have repeatedly warned that outbreaks are spreading most rapidly among children who have not received the recommended doses of the measles vaccine, leaving them highly vulnerable to severe complications.

Since the current outbreak began on 15 March, a total of 766 children have died from confirmed measles infections or symptoms associated with the disease. Of those, laboratory tests confirmed measles in 95 cases, while the remaining 671 deaths involved children displaying symptoms strongly suggestive of the illness.

Over the same period, health authorities have recorded 113,244 suspected measles cases nationwide. Laboratory testing has confirmed infection in 13,735 children, while thousands of additional suspected cases remain under clinical observation or await confirmation. During the latest reporting period alone, 122 of the 990 newly identified cases were confirmed through laboratory testing.

Hospitals across the country continue to experience heavy patient loads. During the past 24 hours, 831 children suffering from measles or its complications were admitted for treatment. At the same time, 900 children recovered sufficiently to be discharged.

Since 15 March, a total of 96,027 children have required hospital admission because of confirmed measles or related symptoms. Of these, 92,383 have completed treatment and returned home. Thousands of children, however, remain under medical care as hospitals continue to manage a steady influx of new patients.

Regional data show that Dhaka Division has suffered the highest number of deaths associated with measles symptoms. The DGHS reported 291 such deaths in the division. Sylhet Division recorded 93 deaths, followed by Rajshahi with 89, Mymensingh with 63, Chattogram with 54, Barishal with 43, Khulna with 29 and Rangpur with nine.

Health experts describe the outbreak as one of the country’s most serious public health emergencies in recent decades. Bangladesh has not witnessed such widespread measles transmission and mortality for more than 25 years.

Historical records illustrate the scale of the current challenge. The country experienced its previous major measles outbreak in 2005, when 25,934 cases were reported. Following years of successful routine immunisation and supplementary vaccination campaigns, infections declined dramatically. As recently as last year, only 132 laboratory-confirmed measles cases were reported nationwide.

The resurgence this year has therefore raised serious concerns about declining immunity among vulnerable children and gaps in vaccination coverage. Although the government launched a mass immunisation campaign more than two months ago, nearly 1,000 new suspected infections continue to be recorded each day, while fatalities continue to rise.

Public health specialists say the immediate priorities remain expanding vaccination coverage, identifying infections at the earliest possible stage, ensuring prompt medical treatment for affected children, strengthening disease surveillance and increasing public awareness among parents and caregivers. They believe that sustained immunisation efforts and rapid clinical intervention will be essential to slowing transmission and preventing further loss of young lives.
