BLACKPINK Marks A Decade Amid Fan Celebration Controversy

Global K-pop girl group BLACKPINK has reached a major milestone, completing 10 years in the music industry. To mark the occasion, the group’s agency, YG Entertainment, has organised a special celebration for fans who have supported the quartet throughout its journey.

However, the anniversary event has also triggered criticism among the group’s enormous international fanbase. Despite BLACKPINK’s millions of followers worldwide, only 40 fans will reportedly be given the opportunity to attend Saturday’s event, scheduled for 8 August. The limited number has left many fans disappointed, with some questioning whether such a small gathering is appropriate for a group of BLACKPINK’s global stature.

YG Entertainment said the event was arranged as a gesture of appreciation for the fans, known collectively as BLINK, who have stood by the group over the past decade. The decision to restrict attendance to just 40 people, however, has prompted a wave of frustration on social media.

For many supporters, BLACKPINK’s 10th anniversary represents a milestone shared by the group and its international fan community. Their view is that an anniversary celebration of such significance should allow more fans to participate, particularly given the group’s extensive following across different parts of the world.

While the scale of the event has become a subject of debate, BLACKPINK member Jennie marked the occasion with an emotional message to fans. In a post on social media, she reflected on how quickly the past decade had passed and expressed gratitude to those who had continued to believe in and encourage her.

Jennie said the love and support she had received throughout the journey had given her the strength to continue moving forward. She also thanked fans and her fellow members for helping turn dreams that once seemed distant into reality.

Her message also highlighted the importance of the bond between the four BLACKPINK members. Referring to Jisoo, Rosé and Lisa, Jennie said that after 10 years, the words ‘thank you’ carried a deeper meaning than before. She expressed gratitude for having shared such a meaningful journey with her fellow members.

BLACKPINK’s decade-long career has extended far beyond music releases. The members have developed individual identities while continuing to maintain the group’s global presence, helping strengthen the international reach of K-pop.

That wider journey has also created a particularly strong relationship between BLACKPINK and its supporters. For BLINK, the anniversary is not simply a date marking the group’s formation; it represents a decade of music, performances and shared memories.

The controversy over the 40-person event has therefore added an unexpected element to an otherwise celebratory milestone. Yet Jennie’s message has placed the focus back on the relationship between the group and its fans.

As BLACKPINK completes its first decade, the anniversary serves as both a celebration of the group’s journey and a reminder of the enormous community that has grown around it. For many fans, the limited event may be disappointing, but the significance of the milestone itself remains undiminished.
