In Comilla, eighth-grade student Imran Hossain, allegedly associated with the Chhatra League, has been sent to jail, preventing him from attending his annual exams that began on Thursday, 20 November. Imran is a student of Dhalua Multipurpose High School in Nangalkot Upazila and has been held at Comilla Central Jail since his arrest.
Police took Imran, son of Chiora village decorator businessman Ishak Mia, from his home late Monday night. The following day, a court sent him to jail. SI Alamgir Hossain filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act, listing 50–60 accused, including 25 named individuals, with Imran as the sixth accused. The charge sheet identifies him as a Chhatra League activist.
According to the case, 50–60 leaders and activists of Chhatra League, Jubo League, Awami League, and affiliated organisations held anti-government slogans, flash marches, and torch processions near Montoli Bridge in Dhalua Union, protesting the International Crimes Tribunal verdict. Police initially arrested the first accused, whose information subsequently led to Imran’s identification.
Imran’s family denies the allegations. His father, Ishak Mia, stated that the family has no political involvement and that police suddenly arrested his son around 3 am. Despite bringing Imran’s exam admit card to the police station, they received no assistance, and the court denied bail. The school headmaster, Belal Hossain Majumdar, said Imran is a regular student with no known political activity and called for his release.
Nangalkot police chief AK Fazlul Haque said there is no photo or video evidence of Imran’s involvement, though five other detainees identified him as an active Chhatra League participant. Comilla Police Superintendent Mohammad Nazir Ahmed Khan added that if allegations are unproven, Imran’s name will not appear in the charge sheet.
