FIFA Increases 2026 World Cup Prize Money Record

FIFA has announced a historic increase in prize money for the 2026 World Cup, with payouts rising by 50 percent compared to the 2022 Qatar tournament. The decision was made at a FIFA Council meeting held in Doha, Qatar, ahead of the Intercontinental Cup final, where officials discussed improvements in competitive standards and finalised the financial framework for the next World Cup.

The upcoming 2026 edition, jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, will feature 48 national teams, marking the largest World Cup in history. FIFA has committed a total of USD 727 million to be distributed among participating football associations, of which USD 655 million is earmarked directly as prize money for the competing teams. The remaining funds are allocated to support tournament preparation and logistical expenses.

Under the new financial structure, the champions of the 2026 World Cup will take home a record USD 50 million, reflecting the tournament’s elevated stature and the increasing commercial value of international football. The runners-up will earn USD 33 million, while the third-placed team will collect USD 29 million, and the fourth-placed team USD 27 million.

In addition to performance-based rewards, FIFA will provide each team qualifying for the main tournament with USD 1.5 million to assist with preparation costs, including training camps, travel, and other essential expenses. This ensures that every participating football association is guaranteed a minimum income of USD 10.5 million, even if eliminated in the group stage. Analysts suggest that this move will particularly benefit emerging football nations, supporting both development and competitiveness.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino described the 2026 World Cup as a “historic event, not only in terms of scale and format but also in financial support for the global football community.” He emphasised that this unprecedented increase in prize money reflects FIFA’s commitment to strengthening the sport worldwide.

The final draw for the 2026 World Cup has already taken place in Washington, D.C., and the complete match schedule has been released. With more teams, larger venues, and record prize money, the 2026 World Cup is shaping up to be the most lucrative and widely anticipated tournament in football history.
