Champions PSG defeated by their poorer neighbours

In a stunning French Cup upset, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) were eliminated by their lowly city neighbours, Paris FC, losing 1-0 in the round of 32. The match, played at PSG’s own Parc des Princes, saw the defending champions bow out to a side with little history of success, in a game defined by discipline, resilience, and one moment of brilliance from a familiar face.

The decisive goal came from Jonathan Ikoné, a former PSG academy graduate who now plays for Paris FC. His strike in the 74th minute secured a historic victory, sending shockwaves through the French footballing community. The irony was not lost on fans, as Ikoné became the very reason for his old club’s premature exit.

Earlier this month, PSG had already suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Paris FC in Ligue 1, yet few expected a repeat upset in the domestic cup. This marks PSG’s earliest French Cup exit since 2014, ending a streak of strong performances in the prestigious competition.

Founded in 1969, Paris FC has long been considered the city’s modest footballing outfit. With no major trophies and a squad lacking star names, the club was not expected to trouble Europe’s footballing heavyweights. Yet, through disciplined defending and clinical counterattacks, they overcame the financial and technical superiority of PSG.

Despite dominating possession (around 70%) and producing 25 shots with seven on target, PSG failed to convert any opportunities. Paris FC, in contrast, needed just four shots to secure victory, demonstrating remarkable efficiency and defensive organisation.

The first half saw PSG create chances but struggle to break down a well-organised defensive wall. The visitors’ goalkeeper, Obed Enkampadio, was outstanding, making seven crucial saves, including a brilliant stop from Kavićha Kavereskelia.

PSG intensified after the break, generating several promising opportunities, yet Paris FC struck on a swift counter. Ikoné’s decisive finish left the home side stunned. Subsequent PSG efforts, including a shot that rattled the crossbar, could not change the outcome.

After the final whistle, an elated Ikoné said, “We are truly happy. Our defence held strong, and I’m delighted to score this goal. I hope it’s not my last.”
